Beginner's Mind - 45 Symbols

Submission for The Phaistos Project - 45 Symbols

One of the greatest modern problems is boredom. Although our many diversions might give the impression of a less bored generation,  it seems increasingly difficult to experience wonder at things as we grow up;  the loud and frantic pace of even our recreational activities leaves most of us incapable of appreciating the more subtle, gentle, and hidden things of life.

In his famous book, The Little Prince, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry wrote: "it is only with the heart that we can see rightly, what is essential is invisible to the eye." This phrase concerns itself with the idea of looking at things with passion and care - that the true meaning of things can only be seen and understood if we perceive them with feeling. Children, for example, are like mini scientists - they  can see magic in the world and believe it. Adults, on the other hand, seem to only concern themselves with the "serious" subjects of life, such as paying bills, getting a better job or buying a bigger, better car.  Because it is thought that we are only allowed to have the right answers and act according to defined plans, we are left following routines - getting stuck in the same patterns of interaction with others and failing to notice pleasurable experiences around us.

As we get older, we forget that life was once a mystery. Although our robotic lives have made it difficult for us to enjoy the ordinary things that often go unnoticed, it is important to recognize that simplicity can also be beautiful. This project seeks to shine a new light on the portrayal of these simple, every day things and encourages people to cultivate a beginner's mind to find a new meaning for them - to approach things with fresh eyes and notice the details and richness in ordinary experiences;  it seeks to give people something to celebrate every day - to help people stop for a moment and start making the essential visible again.
